Interview drama and the waiting game

I had an interview today!

But, the waiting game is the hardest. When I think of all the efforts and hoops I went through last night to prepare for this interview; I even had to run out to a clothing store to get an/and/or lightweight top to wear under my old suit jacket, or a new suit jacket or both. I brought home both.

About the clothes first; With the weight-loss I was finally, finally able to fit into a very nice Jones New York dress suit jacket which I purchased 5-years ago in 2009. I wore it to one interview and even then I couldn’t button the front button. As I got fatter and fatter I got to a point where I could no longer wear it and even fake that it doesn’t fit — oh my, the buttons and the gap between the buttons and button holes were 7-inches apart!

Fast forward to 50+lbs lighter… now the jacket is old, looks old, seems discolored or dusty (it’s black) fits me for sure but is actually too big in some areas like the back and shoulders (gaping – loved seeing that but it’s not attractive) and the buttoning of it is too high-waisted. Who knew? I mean, I could never button it before.  Well, now I know.

I could get away with wearing the old jacket but how I felt in it was more the issue. I’m an older woman (50’s) and I’m guaranteed that my competition will be much younger and those of them who really want to arrive pristine, they will be tough competition. That said, I wanted to look as contemporary as possible, rather than frumpy — and I would have.

Ya know, I just didn’t want to look like I borrowed someone elses old clothes!
I bought a beautiful short suit jacket that certainly does put the old one to shame.

I looked smashing this morning. I arrived 15-minutes early as I always do…. (and they were already ready for me, so Kudo’s for me). With all that homework I did, the clothing drama; though the jacket was easy to find and buy… and I was home in less than 1-hour of shopping, the interview was rather short and they didn’t ask me a single behavioral question. My two interviewers told me much about the job that I would be doing and I confirmed that I would be excited to take on the job and (when do I start?)…

When you have an agent who sends you on these interviews, it’s the agent that has already done the selling of me; and therefore why I had the interview at all. So, generally the interviews are short  and sweet and seem more to the point of ‘looking me over, reading me and to see if we’re going to be compatible’.

I liked the job and two ladies who interviewed me. They are the two that I would be working with and if they feel we’ll be compatible, I’m in.

Hopefully, neither of those ladies owned the black Mercedes that I probably lightly door-dinged when I got out of my car…

So anyway, a 15-minute appearance in the new suiting jacket!
I hope it was worth the $90 investment!

In other important news…

newsThere isn’t really any. I’m being very serious again about food and exercise… that over being just serious and it looks like a lb has fallen off. Onward and downward. Today I shopped for low sodium turkey breast slices, Oroweat extra fiber whole grain bread and … I guess that’s it. I’m not a fan of sandwiches. Usually they equate to high sodium, too much bread and any sandwich must have cheese. Fortunately I don’t like mayonnaise and always use mustard.

My trainer is constantly after me about eating at least up to 1500-calories a day. I’m finicky and certain things that people do eat that is low-fat and high in protein are things I don’t like. Hummus, black beans, soy stuff; stuff like that to get calories and protein are things I won’t eat. I try not to eat grilled chicken salads because of the dressing and the need to prepare the chicken for the salad. Too much work and why would I buy lettuce that will go bad in a day or two and then the fat in the salad dressing issue. No, don’t like just vinegar, so. So it’s hard and lunches for me are the hardest. Anyway, the sandwich thing is pretty easy and highly portable so I have gone this route for my lunches.

Sandwich was delicious.

Last night I texted my trainer that I would not be able to do the session at 6:00. I wasn’t contacted until 3:30PM for the interview which was scheduled for 9:00AM the next day. I had to ‘study’, get clothes together, get hair washed night before to save time in the morning, and so on, not to exclude the inevitable impromptu shopping trip! Sure, training is only an hour investment in time but… getting there: 15-minutes, warm up: 30-minutes, Training: 50-minutes, getting home: 15-minutes, shower — as long as it takes. That’s more like close to 2-hours and I wasn’t up that distraction or interruption of my time.

Anyhoo…. must go put up Halloween lights!

Shhh… Don’t tell my Trainer!

Don’t tell my Trainer

…that this evenings cardio session went very quickly and basically, a piece of cake!

I always run into him; or rather him into me when I workout at night. The man is a beast and trains people until, oh, about 8:00 PM and then he’s on his own time at the gym working out and absolutely doing his rounds checking up on his clients. Knowing this, I can’t skip workouts and should do them in the evenings so that he can see me there. That’s his thing: “I want to see you here every day”. And it’s not like he can’t check on the check-in logs but you guys know what I mean. As well, the BodyBugg doesn’t lie and this is exactly why he wants me wearing it.

BodyBugg report (BodyMedia, inc)

The more I wear this and the more I study it’s reports, the more I get it. For example: Last night I was looking things over and saw a message on my calories burned line that read: “We guesstimate that you are going to exceed your calorie burn target by about 172-calories”. It says that because the day was not quite over and all calories had not been accounted for. My Bugg is programed for being upright; LOL not lying down, from 6am to midnight. So, it will continue to, and I will continue to burn calories — those that we burn just by living — up until midnight. (Then I go into sleep — lying down mode, and sleep mode that is).

Last night I panicked — How am I going to burn 172-caloires?? Oh yeah, that’s right, I just have to move around a little more and those calories that we burn just by living will add up and a little activity will booster it further.

So I went into my closet and hug up all those clothes on the floor; neatly folded but needed to be hung up – for the record. An hour later I came back and re synced my Bugg and it showed I had burned off the 172-calories — and then some.

I also realized; and maybe I’m a slow learner that every second that I am not attached to this thing is lost information and makes data inaccurate.

So the question is: When do I take the time to charge it?

And let me tell you people — this thing is ug-ly. I’m taking my mom to a doctor appointment tomorrow and while it’s nice out these days, I’m going to have to hide it under a sweater. (She doesn’t know about all of this just yet). AND — this is the newest version which comes in WHITE with a white/grey armband. Mine is already dirty. Inside. Thanks to my spray tan. I hope there are replaceable bands online. The old ones did have them and I always saw them at the gym. Of course when I wanted to buy one tonight I’m told there aren’t any and that now they only carry the new BoodyBuggs and there are no accessories. That’s just my luck.

Anyways, I was hoping I could wear it only sometimes and do my diet and fitness incognito — but impossible. I should wear it proudly and maybe I will someday — when I am a walking example of its success AND that the armband doesn’t show all the smushy fat around it.

7-days straight at the gym!!! My home scale gave me the same weight as the scale at my Trainer’s on the first day so when my scale showed a loss of 5.5-lbs this morning, I was excited but I’m going to wait, and believe that when I see it on his scale! The disadvantage I now have  is the night weigh-in and the sodium that was in my store-bought chicken breast — slices. Deli meat.

Yeah, I had to buy the sliced chicken, and I mean HAD TO make a grilled chicken salad and the sooner the better because I was way off my food schedule. None of the chicken in my freezer had been defrosted so in trying to stick to the plan I bought some sliced chicken by Oscar Meyer. And yes, as you can imagine, it tasted like hot dog and the sodium in my food log today as a result of it is SO HUGE that I got a warning along with a congratulations on my food intake. Basically that I did excellent of food again today and with a stiff warning about sodium.  Noting here that I NEVER buy that stuff and only cook real chicken breasts.. but this was an unfortunate emergency.

The interview suit jacket that didn’t fit well enough to wear for interviews last week… because the front button and button-hole were MILES apart… Folks, that jacket fit this morning. Not completely to button but close enough for each side panel to meet me in the middle and close enough now to wear. Now that I don’t need it. For a while anyway…

That is a lot of change in just one week, no?

The greatest challenge(s)

1. The food. The food and choices and how much  — it’s all a new experience now. The way what you eat unfolds at the of the day in reports (the science) based on everything else recorded is crazy. Crazy good. I’m also having difficulty, evidently, making the right choices — the most difficult is to remember to have a serving of healthy carbs with a serving of protein; never to have one without the other. Kashi GoLean is both. Well at least I’m getting that right.

2. Staying motivated. I’m really excited and fired up now in all the newness and the toys; especially after the interview suit incident, but I worry about how long I will stay excited!? There will be a great challenge here to stick with the program but I know that “A” won’t tolerate that! He has a lot at stake in this too. He wants my before and after photo on the wall as one of his success stories. He flat-out told me, he wants that for him and the success for me. Win-Win!

What else?

My free days are numbered (before I start my full-time job). Today was luxurious! I slept in until 6:30; which actually pissed me off because I wanted to sleep later and I seemed wide awake. BUT no, I fell back to sleep and had a crazy cool dream. Dreams. I love them. I woke at 8:45 and that was delightful.

Tuesday I have to take my mom to the doctor but as far as she’s concerned, I won’t stay for dinner with them because I have already planned to meet an old co-worker for dinner and idle chit-chat. The real story is that I have my training appointment at 8:00PM and these cannot be missed — it’s not tolerated and is probably in my contract. I will probably tell my mom about the training in time but not until I really “start to show” and she starts asking questions. I just don’t want to get into it and talk about it or be watched as I shrink (and what I eat) make that information something her tell everyone. Only me, my best friend and my trainer know about this for now.
(Evening workout and cardio)

Wednesday looks free — I hope!!
(I hope to do the Wednesday Body pump class and some cardio; always the cardio but bodypump class depends on my availability).

Thursday is a work day but a training work day. Friday is not a work day so it could be a free one unless someone want’s do so something. Honestly, If I have to meet one more person for lunch… 3 lunch dates in the last week and a half and one tomorrow with mom after the appt .
(evening cardio)

Friday. Hoping very much to have this free day as well (yard work, which I will enjoy)
(Cardio and Bodypump)

Saturday – Training first thing in the morning and cardio as well. Home by 9:0o am and I have plans to see an old friend.

Sunday — Everyone leave me alone!

And Monday — Join the ranks of Full Time employment!

Fitness and good eating must start as soon as tomorrow

And tomorrow is today

As I laid in bed (in a cold room) and couldn’t get up out of bed (didn’t want to) I pondered (again) how my day would pan out. Plans vs. reality are two separate entities. The good news is that I didn’t think about waiting another day to start my food and fitness plan, but in healthier frame of mind, I pondered: do I want to have my oatmeal first, or the blueberry and spinach smoothie first? That is; which will be for breakfast.

qI finally got out of bed and turned on the heat. My thermostat has a mind of its own so setting it to do something at certain time is, moments wasted in a life time — I just doesn’t work, period. I decided to have the oatmeal first (a warm food) and will have the smoothie in a couple of hours. My choice of oatmeal is the easiest, and the best choice for me is Quaker Instant / Weight Control / Maple. Instant oatmeal isn’t the healthiest thing in the world but I digress for the extra fiber; 6g (essential in a WW plan and essential, anyway), 7g protein and the expected 3g of fat. Thems good numbers!

If I had my absolute favorite choice of instant oatmeal it would be the precooked frozen steel-cut packages from Costco. The draw back on those; expensive as hell and I only like the Maple ones. The (I think) $10.+ box of steel-cut oatmeal’ contain 6-maple and 6-blueberry. I was shocked I didn’t like the blueberry and shocked that I was IN LOVE with the maple. If all of those in the box were Maple;; SOLD! But menh… the Quaker it is, and that’s that. (too much said already about oatmeal and one of my lighter resolutions is to be less verbose!)

Thus far I have described my morning and logged my first meal (4-points breakfast) in a long while on WeightWatchers’. Has anyone tried the ActiveLink? The hardest part in WW is tracking  because (probably until now) people who are doing WeightWatchers’ and are VERY active can’t find the correct activity, duration of activity and intensity to log activity appropriately; at least I can’t but I’m over exceedingly literal and OCD in those areas — So I felt that if the Activity Link is exclusively WeightWatchers’ then it should workout very well as a tool.

The Gym Visit

There wasn’t one. Whatzzzamatteawithme? Actually, I decided to get my ass up early in the morning and hit it then. Because I’m segueing back into the stream of things I’m going to start off with the BodyPump class. I hope to do 30-minutes of cardio before, or 15-minutes before the class and 15- 30-minutes of cardio after the class; all depending on how much cardio I do before the class. The goal is a total of 40-minutes of cardio, no matter how it is distributed.

[now…written the next day; which is today…]

I’m hopeless. I didn’t get to the gym yesterday — although I was extraordinarily productive around the house – which, in the fitness world count for very little. The next gym goal was set for the 8:30 Bodypump class and the exception to that commitment would be ‘if I woke up in time’. I did not wake up in time.

Food yesterday: Also hopeless. I started out very well but dinner was sugar. All I have to say about this is that the left over apple pie was NOT good and the Hagen-daz Five was so creamy and sweet it seemed overpowering. So it hit me — remember how horrible you feel right now; and people, it was not a pleasant feeling. I was bloated, has sugar after taste in my mouth, I had guilt and anger. I had nothing but pure hatred for myself! WHY was I doing this to myself? It would be one thing if the pie had been very delicious and satisfying. No part of that crap was satisfying.

So I’ll say to myself again and again in the future: Do you really want to feel so badly and as angry and emotional as you did when you ate that crap? Answer: No, never.

On the lighter side, there is a lot of guilt and embarrassment over 5-lbs. It’s not like I gained it all back; not even close but it makes me happy to know that this bothers me — a lot. Does that make sense?

What I ate Wednesday

It’s cool to stay cool these days!!!

Currently it’s 6:36PM on Tuesday evening (picture me getting my WIAW completed early for a change) and sitting here in my upstairs office facing an open window…. I am waiting for the next rare; but they do come, slightly cool breeze!

It’s just been too HOT these days!

I had a full weekend of eating events — a BBQ one day and pool-side party the next. Plenty of opportunities to take photos AND to eat but those who were the  hosts of these events had simpler ideas. That said, I loved eating the Pizza’s, the sweet potato mini pies and a TON of watermelon!

IMG_2926 melon too

I drank a lot of this; Pellegrino, not Gin and Tonic’s!

Ate a lot of junk:

I’m embarrassed to say… But however, this table was full of every imaginable junk food that I dislike. I have to say, it was frustrating!

and thankfully — The Pizza’s arrived!

Those photos above are more of the ‘refreshing photos! I also went to a BBQ party on Saturday and while the food was thoughtful — pretty and yummy, much of it was fall festivities food. Even the photos look like fall!

7-layer mini dips! Recipe taken from Pinterest!

Sweet Potato mini pies! To be blunt, the ones I make at Thanksgiving will be much more refined. At least less messy but they were DELICIOUS!

And that’s all folks!
My photos cover the span of 2-days, not just one; a weekend, if you will!

Telling it in photos!

Quality food (um, hum)

More quality food, but this is what we do…

And it seems, a great day for sun and sky shots and thunderheads!

Um, quality food — you know I’m lying. Usually we have better quality food this time; signals got crossed. There were exactly 3-versions; brought by three different people of Mexican 7-layer dip on the table. I hate 7-layer dip! But it’s not all about me and lord knows I don’t need 7-layer dips of any kind but I did take an entire watermelon (sliced) with all the slices in neat rows. You’ll never guess — two other people contributed watermelon!

Erasing all the bad habits…

Today still holds — I will be at the gym, at some point today and it’s going to be lb after lb lost over the next few months. And yeah, I get to eat very healthily too! I love to eat healthily! I feel so much better overall and so if only… I could just give up the dessert like stuff. This will be the hardest part of the battle!

Tea, and summer!

In the interest of trying new things

I never make it, never craved it butcha’ know, sometimes you just get a hankering for something different. Speaking of different, my guess is that I have not seen a tea bag in a while; shocked when I saw a really cool looking nylon tea bag in my tea boxes!

I’m trying to (remember) to eat more fruit, take in more liquids and while water is best, I seem to have difficulty finding myself at the water faucet. Bottled water never works for me; if I’m drinking water I want it in a covered cup with TONS of ice and a lemon. Otherwise, not so interested.

And so, I bought some nice herbal teas to make into ice tea. Currently I’m drinking a smooth Green tea w lemon and honey. Decaffeinated and MOST IMPORTANTLY – not sweetened. Pretty good stuff. The last batch I made was a blueberry mix with antioxidants. Never had a blueberry tea, but … it was GOOD!

Sunday: Cooked for mom tonight

…because I was certain she needed a decent home cooked meal and an early evening outside of their own place. A change of pace. it was nice of course to hear; as we sat on the back patio drinking wine and eating cheese and crackers, she said, “It’s so wonderful to get out of that house and sit outside for a change”! And I said, “that’s exaCTLY the plan”!

This meal was amazing if I do say so myself. Not exactly not fattening but hec, it did have fresh shrimp in it!

Leading up to the meal, I chopped garlic

I rinsed shrimp

I rinsed asparagus

I squeezed lime juice

Finally, Shrimp & Asparagus Fettuccine

And he is not the only one who liked it!

Many kudos from the family on this dish!!!

What I ate Wednesday

Or possibly, what I did on Tuesday to eat on Wednesday?

The aging artichokes:
Use them or lose them!

I decided to use them!! But I can’t eat them all at once so I cooked them. First and obviously I washed and trimmed the artichokes.

Next, I cut them in half to reduce the cooking time — also in half. I don’t wait well so this works out perfectly.

Then into the water for their swim. I think this took 20-minutes.

And Voila. 6-artichoke halves ready for an appetizer (thinking of having one now) or as a dinner side dish.

What I ate this morning:

What I am eating now:

Most breakfast and lunch food photos that you see from me will be shown at my desk. I am a computer addict so it stands to reason the plate will be set down on my calendar, my bills, or something else, office.

This wrap is nothing but a lot of mixed greens, some low sodium turkey slices; real, not processed from Trader Joe’s rolled up in a high fiber tortilla. The watermelon speaks for itself and I have so say that these Personal melons (the store really called them that) are probably the best water melon I’ve had — ever. You just never know what your going to get with fruit but this one was a winner. I have to admit that the wrap was not very good — but ain’t it pretty?!

Post workout drink:

Banana, chocolate cocoa powder, protein powder, 1% milk and ice.

What I plan on eating for dinner

Salmon, artichoke (of course) and brown rice!

And, what I should not have eaten:

The low fat ice cream cone!
